It’s a little thing, really, but it still strikes me as a milestone: SanDisk announced this morning that its 4-gigabyte SDHC (Secure Digital, High Capacity) card will be available in October for about $216.
What’s so special about a 4GB card that costs more than a mid-range, 4GB iPod nano? It’s that SD cards have finally hit that magic point where you can store a ton of stuff on them.
One could argue that 2GB is already a ton of stuff. Yeah, it is. But in an age when more digital camcorders are beginning to store video on SD, products like this can get a gadget freak totally excited about where things are headed. A typical DVD-R holds 4.7 GB. It only costs a buck, sure, but it’s huge. The way these price trends work, a year from now you’ll be able to buy a 4GB flash card for a mere $99. Maybe less.
That’s when super-small video cameras will go mainstream, enabled by the tiny storage. I can hardly wait.
