- Meet the Sony PSP2, codenamed NGP. Sony’s next-generation handheld gaming device will focus on the following areas: Revolutionary User Interface, Social Connectivity, Location-based Entertainment, Converging Real and Virtual (augmented) Reality. Features include a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor, 5-inch touchscreen OLED display with 960 x 544 resolution, dual analog sticks, 3G, WiFi, GPS, a rear-mounted touchpad, the same accelerometer / gyroscope motion sensing technology in the PlayStation Move controllers, an electronic compass, and front and rear cameras. - Google released a platform preview version of its upcoming Android Honeycomb OS, which now sports a tablet-friendly interface that the upcoming Motorola Xoom will highlight, multitasking, an improved notification system, multiple customizable home screens with widgets and stackable items, and a full-screen tabbed browser. - Nokia’s market share shrank 31% over the last three months due in no small part to the huge success of the iPhone and Android devices. Net income fell to 745 million euros ($1.02 billion) from 948 million euros, a year earlier. “Nokia faces some significant challenges in our competitiveness and our execution,” Elop said in the company’s earnings statement today. “The industry changed and now it’s time for Nokia to change faster.” Its shares fell 8.7% as a result. - Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook fan page was hacked. One user updated the page with a grammatically-incorrect status that called for the social network to become a “social business” with some help from user investments. Facebook attributed the issue to a bug. (BBC News)
- Skype won’t go public until the second half of the year, despite investor expectations that the Internet phone company would go public earlier. (Wall Street Journal)
- Netflix, which added 7.7 million subscribers last year and passed the 20 million milestone, is reportedly knee-deep in the process of “extensive Facebook integration,” a big step for the online video distribution site which until now, has not featured any significant social media features. AllThingsD speculated such integration would improve Netflix’s movie recommendations and help users share their personal viewing history in their news feed as well as recommend videos to friends. - Salesforce.com’s hiring of former Microsoft general manager Matt Miszewski prompted Microsoft to file (and win) a temporary restraining order, alleging that his new position at Senior VP of global public sector violates his employee confidentiality and non-compete agreements. (Tech Flash)
