Chesapeake Energy Corp. (NYSE: CHK) said that it plans to form a $1 billion “venture capital” fund to invest in companies whose technology relies on natural gas instead of overseas petroleum. The money will come from diverting up to 2% of the company’s annual drilling budget. Chesapeake also announced the new platform’s first two investments: $150 million into Clean Energy Fuels Corp. (Nasdaq: CLNE), North America’s largest provider of natural gas fuel for transportation, via a tranched convertible debt structure; and $155 million for Sundrop Fuels Inc., a Louisville, Colo.-based developer of gasification-based drop-in biofuels.
