FORTUNE — After the jury turned in its verdict in the patent trial of the century — ordering Samsung to pay Apple a record $1.05 billion in damages — both sides submitted a long list of motions to modify or overturn one or more of the jury’s findings. Two stood out:
- Apple (AAPL) claimed it was entitled to triple damages because the jury found that Samsung had “willfully” violated Apple’s patents.
- Samsung, pointing to some serious inconsistencies in the process the jury used to reach that $1.05 billion figure, wanted the whole thing thrown out.
On Tuesday, Judge Lucy Koh handed down a complicated ruling in which she granted some of that long list of motions and denied others. If you want to get into the weeds, Apple Insider has the text of her order (part 1 and part 2), and FOSS Patents’ Florian Mueller has a detailed analysis.
But the headline is that Judge Koh denied the two most important motions. Apple doesn’t get to triple the damage award and Samsung doesn’t get to take it apart piece by piece. As far as her court is concerned, the jury’s $1.05 billion verdict stands. If either side wants to change it, they’ll have to take it to the appeals court.
