FORTUNE — Money and talent are no guarantee that a Hollywood movie won’t stink. (See Ashton Kutcher’s ‘Jobs’: What the critics are saying.)

But for the Sony Pictures (SNE) project based on Walter Isaacson’s Steve Jobs, the pieces are starting to fall into place.

Aaron Sorkin, whose credits include The Social Network and The West Wing, has reportedly finished the screenplay.

David Fincher, who directed The Social Network — as well as Fight Club, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and a couple episodes of House of Cards — has been tapped to direct it.

And now, according to The Wrap, Fincher has found his Steve Jobs:

“Fincher recently met with Sony’s Amy Pascal to discuss the possibility of directing the film, and told her, in no uncertain terms, that he’d only take the reins of the project if [Christian] Bale plays Jobs.”

Bale is a versatile, body-sculpting actor who can play anything from Shakespeare to Disney. He’s probably best known for his portrayal of Bruce Wayne in Christopher Nolan‘s Batman movies and for his 2013 role as the con-man with an elaborate comb-over in American Hustle, which earned him an Oscar nomination.

He’s not a dead ringer for Apple’s (AAPL) late co-founder, but he’s probably close enough.
