Facebook users weren’t able to log onto the world’s largest social network for about 30 minutes Thursday morning after a global outage. The resulting frustration launched a Twitter hashtag and a slew of commentary — and jokes — on the social platform.

The $168 billion company resolved the problem that affected its apps, website and messaging services. The outage appeared to be more widespread than during past disruptions, affecting areas worldwide.

“We resolved the issue quickly, and we are now back to 100%,” said a Facebook spokesperson. “We are sorry for any inconvenience.”

Users saw a generic error message on the site, reading “Sorry, something went wrong,” near 1 a.m. PST. Many people logged onto Twitter (TWTR) and other social networks to complain, and the hashtag #facebookdown began trending worldwide.

Facebook (FB) has faced other outages over the past few years, but they are rare. During one in 2010, the site went down for almost 2 1/2 hours. The company explained the disruption with an almost 400-word clarification and apology on its engineering blog.
