Sleeping while you’re driving is a big no-no, but grabbing 40 winks on your way to work may soon be possible.
Daimler has unveiled a new concept car called the Mercedes-Benz F 015 — a futuristic, self-driving car that would essentially act as a mobile living room, with room for up to four people to lounge in its cabin. As Reuters notes, the machine is pure Mercedes luxury — napa leather seats, blue LED lighting, and aluminum and glass surfaces.
Revealed Monday at the International Consumer Electronics Show, the car can be operated both manually and autonomously. When someone is actually driving, the driver’s seat swivels to face the steering wheel, while it is faced towards the back for conversation when the car is driving itself.
Self-driving cars are the current obsession for many in the tech space. General Motors (GM) has said that some level of autonomous driving will be available in its cars by 2017. Google (GOOG) has an entire project dedicated to the idea. And a self-driving Audi drove more than 500 miles into Las Vegas for CES.
Though there is no potential release date for the F 015, Mercedes seems to be staking out its place in the more luxurious side of the emerging market, as one might expect.
Car tech has been a major theme at CES so far, with GM and others unveiling a number of innovations.
