The HTC Vive is getting ace initial reviews from tech writers around the web. The headset was developed with video game company Valve, the creators of Portal and Half-life.

Several journalists who spent time with the Vive said it could become a real competitor to the Facebook-owned Oculus VR’s Oculus Rift (though Oculus hasn’t released a consumer headset yet). Here’s a round-up of some of the coverage Wednesday:

From Gizmodo’s Carlos Rebato:

I saw the future today. I mean that. I got the chance here at MWC to try the new VR headset that Valve and HTC are developing. Is it good? It’s absolutely incredible. This thing is just…my god you guys I can’t even.

From The Verge’s Vlad Savov:

As early as this first try with the Vive VR may be, I’m excited by it. Hand and head tracking is done without any noticeable inaccuracies or latency, and if developers continue creating rich VR experiences like the ones I made my way through this week, there’ll be plenty of reason to want one for your home.

From Engadget’s Nicole Lee:

It was the most immersive experience, and frankly, the most fun I’ve had with a VR headset strapped on my head.

I walked away from the demo a complete believer, not just in VR, but also in HTC and Valve, and I can’t wait to see what’s next. HTC has said that the developer edition of the Vive will be available later this spring, while a commercial retail version will be in stores by the end of the year. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to afford this yet, but if I can? Sign me up.
