Olive Garden is often known for two things: cheesy TV commercials and amazing, addictive breadsticks. Now there’s a new use for those crispy, doughy obelisks: sandwiches.
The restaurant chain, owned by Darden Restaurants (DRI), is offering both meatball and chicken parmesan sandwiches made with the breadsticks, reports USA Today.
“We’re always looking to evolve our menu,” Olive Garden spokeswoman Jessica Dinon told the paper. “We’re always bringing on new items, and right now we’re really taking those dishes our guests know and love and giving them more ways to enjoy it. Obviously people love our breadsticks.”
This isn’t the only time in recent memory that Olive Garden’s breadsticks have been in the news. Last year, activist investor Starboard Value put out a much-ballyhooed report claiming Olive Garden gave out too many breadsticks, a contention diners surely disagreed with. The report also said Olive Garden should push to sell more alcohol, and scolded the company for not salting its pasta water.
