Hasbro (HAS) is turning another one of its board games into a movie, with a film adaptation of Monopoly a go at Lionsgate.
Lionsgate announced that The Truman Show writer Andrew Niccol is signed to write the script for the film, which will focus on a young boy (who lives on Baltic Ave.) As he sets off on an adventure to strike it rich. Lionsgate says the boy will use “Chance and Community” on his journey, but there’s no word on whether that comes in the form of two decks of magical cards he has on hand or simply his ability to take risks and seek help from others.
Little else is known about what Niccol’s script will include, but the Gattaca writer will presumably find a place for Rich Uncle Pennybags in the film, as well as some form of the game’s playable token pieces. There’s also no word on whether he’ll take a page from The Truman Show and reveal that the entire story is being played out on a giant Monopoly board.
Hasbro’s last game-to-movie adaptation was 2012’s Battleship.
Lionsgate and Hasbro’s Allspark Pictures will produce the film, which does not currently have a release date.
