Good morning, Broadsheet readers! Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes gets a big “yes” from the FDA, Ellen Pao thinks the trolls are winning, and Angela Merkel has a conversation that makes her Greece talks look like a walk in the park. Have a fantastic Friday!

EVERYONE'S TALKING

• Politics can be hard to watch. Confronted by a tearful Palestinian girl who pleaded for her family to be allowed to stay in Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel said: "Politics is sometimes hard. Some people will have to go back.” A brutal video of the exchange was all over the Internet yesterday, prompting some observers to call Merkel heartless and others to defend her as honest.  New York Times

ALSO IN THE HEADLINES

• Putting Theranos to the test. Theranos, the medical diagnostics company founded and led by Elizabeth Holmes, has won FDA approval to process a complex blood test outside of the lab. To test out the company's analyzers, Coins2Day's Roger Parloff took Theranos' experimental Ebola test right in our conference room. Coins2Day

• Don't feed the trolls. Former Reddit CEO Ellen Pao writes that the trolls are winning the battle for the Internet and asks all of us to "to call out abuse when we see it." Washington Post

• A distressed mom. Remember when AOL's Tim Armstrong blamed two "distressed babies" for his decision to make cuts to employee benefits? Deanna Fei is the mother of one of those babies and has written a book about her experience. This excerpt from Girl In Glass argues that caring for premature babies is an expensive and entirely worthwhile proposition.  Coins2Day

• And the nominees are... The Emmy nominations are out and the WSJ has a take on who triumphed and who got snubbed. Among the winners: Orange is the New Black, once again nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series, and Orphan Black's Tatiana Maslany, who was inexplicably passed over last year. WSJ

• Savior or fraudster? This profile of private equity executive Lynn Tilton tries to square two very different Tiltons: The one who says her firm rescues companies and saves American jobs, and the one who is accused by the SEC of defrauding investors. Bloomberg

• Famous friends. Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Garner and Barbra Streisand are among the celebs who have contributed to Team Hillary.  The Hill

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

• Social stigma? Social media is the only part of the larger media industry where women hold the majority of leadership positions. This Medium post digs into what that that means for female writers and editors—and for female social media editors dealing with the stigma of having the newsroom's "girly job." Medium

• Transgender support. Google and Airbnb ran ads advocating diversity during the portion of Wednesday night's ESPY awards that honored Caitlyn Jenner. Coins2Day

• Cameron minds the gap.  In an attempt to fight the gender pay gap, UK Prime Minister David Cameron says his government will institute regulations requiring companies with more than 250 employees to publicly disclose the average pay of their male and female workers.  The Atlantic

• Dock the debt.  International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde is reminding European leaders that the new Greek bailout program won't work unless the nation's creditors also agree to lower its debt burden to boost growth.  Bloomberg

• Young love. A speech by 20-year-old Mhairi Black, the UK’s youngest MP, is getting plenty of love online. In her first address to the House of Commons, Black attacked the "uncaring, uncompromising and out-of-touch" government for rising poverty levels and cuts to the welfare system. Time

• A foodie fascination. Hoping for a seat at L.A. Restaurant Sqirl? Get in line—as in the one outside, snaking down the block. This Bloomberg story asks what it is that makes Jessica Koslow's odd, tiny restaurant so irresistible to so many.  Bloomberg

Tune in to Coins2Day Live today and every Friday at 3 pm ET at Coins2Day.com. Leigh Gallagher hosts Coins2Day Live, and the show will include interviews with GoDaddy CEO Blake Irving, Stitch Fix CEO Katrina Lake and others from this week's Coins2Day Brainstorm Tech conference in Aspen.
