Just graduated law school or looking to switch firms? You might want to take a look at the new “Best Law Firms for Women” before you starting sending our your resume.
Working Mother Media and consulting firm Flex-Time Lawyers have released their annual list of the 50 best law firms for working moms. The list is intended to recognize firms that successfully retain and promote female lawyers.
All the firms on the “Best Law Firms for Women” list offer flex-time, reduced hours and paid paternity and adoption leave. Forty-eight of the 50 make lawyers working reduced hours eligible for equity partnership promotion.
A few notable stats about the 50 firms that made the list:
- These firms employ more female equity partners (20%) than the national average (17%). The 2015 list has the highest average percentage of female equity partners since 2009.
- 16% have at least three women among their top ten “rainmakers”—defined as equity partners credited with generating the most gross revenue from clients. That’s up from 11% last year.
- Women hold 27% of the equity partner promotion committee seats, the highest percentage in the past five years.
- At firms with a single-tier partnership structure, the percentage of equity partner promotions going to women is 33%, up from 31% last year. At two-tier firms, female equity partner promotions increased to 30%, from 25% last year.
- 35% of non-equity partner promotions went to women. That’s a drop from 38% in 2014.
According to Jennifer Owens, editorial director of Working Mother Media, the increase in women holding equity partner promotion committee seats is particularly notable. “That’s where the power is,” she says. Owens also points to the uptick in firms with at least three women in their top rainmakers. “Three of your top ten is not an anomaly,” says Owens. “Women are actually making big money for these firms.”
