Hewlett-Packard is installing an executive to oversee a new 3-D printing group after the company splits into two separate business on November 1, according to an internal memo obtained by Coins2Day.
Steve Nigro, HP’s senior vice president of imaging and printing, will take charge of the 3D printing business for the newly created HP Inc., the company that will focus on printers and personal computers.
“As our first 3D printing product nears commercial availability, I’m creating a new 3D Printing business group and center of excellence,” wrote Dion Weisler, the soon-to-be HP Inc. CEO, wrote in the memo. “With that in mind, I have asked Stephen Nigro to turn his entire focus to 3D Printing, continuing to report to me.”
HP (HPQ) has been developing 3D printing technology over the years, but has yet to release a printer. Last fall, HP said it plans to do so in 2016.
HP’s decision to split into two companies is intended to give the new smaller units more focus and foster faster decision-making. Meg Whitman will become CEO of the other company, Hewlett-Packard Enterprise, which will focus on selling data center gear and business consulting services.
