Jessica Alba

Though Alba is known for her work on screen, she's spent this year behind the scenes at The Honest Company, the eco-friendly firm she co-founded with Healthy Child, Healthy World author Christopher Gavigan, LegalZoom.com, ShoeDazzle.com founder Brian Lee, and former PriceGrabber.com VP Sean Kane. Its mission of selling chemical-free diapers, wipes, cleaning products, and more has impressed: The Honest Company received $27 million in funding in March from investors like General Catalyst, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and Institutional Venture Partners.

Alba seems to have found her passion with this company. "it was important to me to that The Honest Company have a cause component as part of its DNA, engage in environmentally sound practices, and actively communicate with our customer base to deliver the eco-friendly products they most desire all under one roof," she says. "We are a triple bottom line company, contributing to a better world and bigger mission extending beyond business."

Jessica Alba‘s all-natural product line, the Honest Company, has been hit with a lawsuit that claims it ‘deceptively and misleadingly’ labels and markets its products as being ‘natural’.

In legal documents obtained by PEOPLE, consumer Jonathan D. Rubin claims that a number of products contain “unnatural” and “synthetic” ingredients and also says that the Honest Sunscreen product is “ineffective”.

Rubin singles out a number of products including Honest Hand Soap, Honest Diapers, and Honest Multi-Surface Cleaner, as misleading consumers.

“Plaintiff Jonathan D. Rubin brings this lawsuit against Honest individually and on behalf of a nationwide class including all other similarly situated purchasers of the Products,” the suit reads.

Earlier this month, the company was under fire after some customers complained that their sunscreen, which claimed to have SPF 30, was inefficient. Some users expressed their anger and frustration by sharing photos of their sunburns online.

The Honest Company quickly responded to these claims and released a statement to PEOPLE.

“The Honest Company is committed to providing safe and effective products, and we take all consumer feedback very seriously.”

“Our sunscreen Lotion was tested, by an independent 3rd party, against the protocols prescribed by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration’s (FDA) monograph for over-the-counter sunscreen products. The results showed that our product is effective and safe for use as an 80 minute water-resistant (FDA’s highest rating), SPF 30 sunscreen lotion in accordance with FDA regulations when used as directed (Shake Well. Apply liberally and evenly 15 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating, immediately after towel drying and at least every 2 hours).”

After complaints continued, Abla decided to personally defend her brand by releasing a blog post, along with co-founder Christopher Gavigan.

“Protecting our loved ones and yours is the reason we founded The Honest Company,” reads the post. “As parents, it pains us to hear that anyone has had a negative experience with our Sunscreen. We develop and use Honest Sunscreen to protect our own children—Honor, Haven, Luke, Evie, and Poppy—at the park, in the pool, outside, every day. As with everything we do, we take sun protection seriously here at Honest.”
