Fiat Chrysler (FCAU) didn’t fully report death and injury claims to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.
The car maker discovered the discrepancies itself, NHTSA said on Tuesday.
The time frame for the reporting errors is not known. Fiat Chrysler issued a statement saying that it noticed the errors and quickly reported the problems to authorities. Fiat said it was “committed to a thorough investigation, to be followed by complete remediation.”
“This represents a significant failure to meet a manufacturer’s safety responsibilities,” NHTSA head Mark Rosekind said, according to the Journal. “NHTSA will take appropriate action after gathering additional information on the scope and causes of this failure.”
The reports to NHTSA are designed to help head-off potential safety problems. The Journal notes that this problem comes just months after NHTSA levied a $105 million fine on Fiat Chrysler for recall lapses.
