The long-range missile tests Iran conducted over the weekend likely violated an international ban but won’t derail the multilateral agreement on the country’s nuclear program, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations said on Wednesday.
“We’re just getting the specifics,” Ambassador Samantha Power said at Coins2Day‘s Most Powerful Women summit in Washington, D.C. “But all the indicators are that it would be a violation.” Once confirmed, Power said the next step will be to present findings at the U.N. Security Council and “look at what other steps we can take.”
But Power said the international community will pursue a check on Iran’s show of force while also moving ahead on the landmark nuclear deal. “One of the really important features in implementation of the recent Iran deal to dismantle Iran’s nuclear program is going to have to be enforcement of the resolutions and the standards that remain on the books,” she said. “I think we have to walk and chew gum at the same time.”
