A restaurant in Israel is giving Jews and Arabs who sit together a steep discount on hummus.
Called Hummus Bar, the restaurant’s selling its namesake product for 50% off when patrons of mixed religion dine with one another, The Times of Israel reports.
The Netanya restaurant’s move comes after violence in Jerusalem has intensified in recent days.
“Scared of Arabs? Scared of Jews?” The restaurant advertised in a recent Facebook post, as translated by the publication. “By us we don’t have Arabs! But we also don’t have Jews… By us we’ve got human beings!”
The post, which went up last week, already has nearly 6,000 likes and has been shared over 1,500 times.
“And real excellent Arab hummus! And great Jewish falafel! And a free refill for every serving of hummus, whether you’re Arab, Jewish, Christian, Indian, etc.” The restaurant continued in the post.
Per the Times of Israel:
Manager Kobi Tzafrir said that by the post-lunch rush on Monday, Hummus Bar had already served several tables with both Arabs and Jews, a trend that’s been consistent since the ad went up on Facebook on October 13. He said the idea’s been well received by Arabs and Jews alike, as well as people online from as far afield as Japan who’d heard of the initiative.
