A federal judge sentenced disgraced former Subway spokesperson Jared Fogle to more than 15 years in prison, according to numerous press reports, after he pleaded guilty to charges of crossing state lines to commit sex acts with minors as well as distributing and receiving child pornography.
Fogle had agreed in August to plead guilty to the charges a month after federal investigators raided his home in search of child pornography. Before Thursday’s sentencing, Fogle also agreed to pay his 14 victims a total of $1.4 million in restitution.
Subway cut ties with Fogle in August after the restaurant chain previously suspended its relationship with its longtime pitchman. Fogle famously gained national attention for a commercial he appeared in 15 years ago in which he claimed having lost 200 pounds through a diet consisting of Subway sandwiches. The ad’s popularity evolved into a regular gig for Fogle as the fast food chain’s spokesman.
Prosecutors had been seeking a 12 1/2-year sentence for Fogle, whose attorneys asked for five years, the AP reports. Before officially entering his guilty plea and hearing the sentencing on Thursday, Fogle told U.S. District Judge Tanya Walton Pratt that he understood the plea meant he would likely go to prison.
