How do you spot ride-hailing company Lyft’s customers? Look for those with an affinity for Mexican food and mass transit.
As 2015 comes to a close, the company revealed on Tuesday the winners of its first annual “Lyftie Awards” for local and national categories, such as most visited restaurant and most visited coffee chain. Mexican restaurants took the top spot nationwide this year (for instance Tacolicious was named most visited restaurant in San Francisco).
Lyft (LYFT) also found that its passengers often use its service in order to get to (and from) transit stops, which include bus stops and train stations. In fact, according to the company, transit stops were the most popular destination for its riders in 2015.
On the one hand, the results aren’t very surprising given that many passengers use Lyft (and other ride-hailing services) as an alternative to public transportation, although it’s a bit pricier.

However, as a Lyft spokeswoman explained to Coins2Day, passengers are more often grabbing a ride during bad weather or to major transit hubs (such as Caltrain in San Francisco, Penn Station in New York City, etc.) Instead of closer transit stops that aren’t easily accessible.
The company, it said, used anonymized passenger data to tally up each city’s top destinations

One destination category noticeably missing from the company’s inaugural awards list is airports. Lyft and industry rival Uber have long been working to convince major airports to let their drivers drop off and pick up passengers, and have been slowly, but surely, making progress.
Last week, Lyft was the first ride-sharing company to get approval to pick up passengers from Los Angeles Airport, its latest victory.
However, a Lyft spokeswoman said that while airports are certainly an important service, the company chose not to include it and declined to further elaborate.
But it wouldn’t be hard to figure out why: The company is still far from getting clearance from most airports across the country, and passengers are likely finding other ways to get picked-up or dropped off by the company at the same airports it’s still working to get clearance from. In short, it’s likely a touchy subject at the moment, and doesn’t want to highlight it.
