Get ready for a blast from the past.
Samsung’s (SSNLF) soon to be launched Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge smartphones—its regular and curved-screen models, respectively—are getting a retro makeover. The company plans to bring back water resistance and microSD card compatibility, which allows for expanded storage, a person familiar with the latest designs reportedly told the tech news website VentureBeat.
The South Korean phone maker last incorporated these features in its Galaxy S5 handsets, released two iterations ago in April 2014. The company’s Galaxy S6 models, released a year later, omitted these aspects.

In addition to possessing mini-memory card slots and dust and water resistance—known technically as IP67 certifications—the phones are rumored to include rapid charging ports and to ape Apple’s (AAPL) 3D touch feature, adding pressure sensitivity to their touch-screen displays. Another possible addition is a retina scanner. Some of these details came to light in an earlier report in the Wall Street Journal.
Other anticipated features include larger batteries and lower resolution rear cameras, down to 12 megapixels from 16 megapixels in the S6 models. The seemingly downgraded cameras reportedly have better low-light visibility, and reportedly allow the rear lenses’ to be flush with the phones’ back panels as was not the case with previous models.

Other than that, industry watchers expect the upcoming handsets to look fairly similar to the previous Galaxy S6 models. They anticipate Samsung will unveil the phones ahead of this year’s Mobile World Congress, a handset-centric event to be held in Barcelona, Spain, next month.
The company did not immediately reply to Coins2Day’s request for comment.
