Netflix and DreamWorks Animation are expanding their partnership to develop a string of original series, including two new kids’ shows based off a reimagining of Voltron and Guillermo del Toro’s Trollhunters.
Guillermo del Toro’s new series is based off the young adult horror novel of the same name and will unveil a “new, fantastical world wrapped around two best friends who make a startling discovery beneath their hometown,” according to Netflix (NFLX).
Voltron was an animated series that aired in 1984 and 1985 featuring a team of astronauts who pilot a giant super robot called “Voltron.” Netflix and DreamWorks (DWA) haven’t released details on how this series will be revamped.
The two new series will launch in 2016, and the companies are working on other releases in upcoming years that will be produced by DreamWorks based on its recent, upcoming, and classic feature films. DreamWorks has released a string of well-received kids’ movies in recent years like How to Train Your Dragon, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda, and Shrek. (All of those releases have sequels.)
The expanded partnership between Netflix and DreamWorks includes extended rights to existing DreamWorks content worldwide (except China), as well as what’s called “second window rights,” which will allow streaming of those series following the expiration of the deal.
