Despite his bold pronunciations about Muslim immigration and a petition that is more than half a million strong, Donald Trump isn’t going to miss out on his chance to ride the London Eye.
The House of Commons in the UK debated on the idea of banning Trump from entering the country but did not hold a vote, reported the BBC. Trump is currently the leader in most national polls for the Republican nomination for the presidency.
Paul Flynn, a Labour MP from Wales, said that while he found Trump’s proposal regarding Muslims to be “extremely dangerous,” he didn’t want to take actions that could be seen as “anti-American.” Victoria Atkins, a Conservative MP whose constituency includes the village of New York (pop. 150), described Trump as a “wazzock” for his immigration policies but criticized the chamber for holding the debate.
The UK has banned other people from entering the country for hate speech — including far-right US political commentator Michael Savage and Shirley Phelps-Roper, a member of and spokesperson for the Westboro Baptist Church, famous for its anti-gay stances.
Trump, though, remains safe. It would likely be a diplomatic nightmare if Britain were to ban the president of the US, clearly its most important ally.
