A Little League football team in Oklahoma isn’t very happy with Walmart.
The Luther, Okla. Team, the Luther Lions, is petitioning the retail giant to rebuild their football field, which was destroyed to make way for a Walmart Express (WMT) store. But that store recently closed down after less than a year in business, according to NewsChannel 4.
Julie Moore, a resident of the town, started a Change.org petition, which currently has 249 signatures.
“Walmart bought the land for their Walmart Express store in Luther, OK. That land was the little league football field,” wrote Moore in the petition. “The little league lost their field. They have been using the high school field for the games, but not for practices.”
She added, “They have to pay for this privilege. They also lost the revenue from the concession stand sales on game days. These funds were a large part of how the teams were kept equipped.”
“They work hard, and they love football,” Moore said in an interview with NewsChannel 4. “Everybody’s really frustrated. It’s like adding insult to injury. We lost our field, but now it feels like we lost it for no reason.”
The move to close the newly opened location comes as Walmart announced plans to shutter 154 stores across the country and 269 stores globally. As Coins2Day reported, the closures will affect about 10,000 workers.
Walmart plans to sell or lease the land used for the Oklahoma store, according to Newschannel 4.
“Walmart should do the right thing and rebuild the field and donate it to Luther Youth Football,” wrote Moore in the petition.
