As gas prices fall across the country, some Michiganders look like they’re getting the best deal.
In what appeared to be a price war between two gas stations in Houghton Lake, Mich., the price for a gallon of regular gas hit nationwide lows. As the two stations, Beacon & Bridge Market and Marathon, competed for customers, USA Today reports that prices dropped to just 47 cents a gallon last Sunday, which hasn’t been since the 1960s. A clerk at one of the stations told NBC News, “There were so many cars the police were called in to direct traffic.”
But then gas prices promptly went back to fairly normal rates. As of Monday, a gallon of regular gas at the two stations cost $1.46 and $1.47, which is still pretty low compared to the rest of the country.
The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Michigan is currently $1.70, according to AAA’s daily fuel gauge report, about 18 cents below the national average. This is the first time in seven years that the state average has fallen below $1.75, according to local ABC-affiliated news station WXYZ.
When NBC asked Beacon & Bridge whether it would offer ultra-low gas prices again, a representative refused to comment. However, as Coins2Day has previously reported, gas prices tend to change seasonally, so we can expect to see a 50 cent hike by spring.
