SAN FRANCISCO - FEBRUARY 09: A sign stands outside of a McDonald's restaurant February 9, 2009 in San Francisco, California. Fast food chain restaurant McDonald's reported a 7.1 percent increase in same store sales for January as people look towards cheaper food alternatives in the weakening economy. Forget chicken and waffles. This is chicken and pancakes — all wrapped up in one portable sandwich.

McDonald’s is testing out its all-new Chicken McGriddle, which layers the chain’s classic fried chicken patty between two maple syrup-infused pancake buns. The test comes in the wake of the McDonald’s launch of its 24-hour-a-day breakfast menu, which has been a boon for the fast-food chain.

Some McDonald’s devotees may have already tried this sandwich before now. Versions of the sweet-and-savory sandwich have been tested in various markets before now, but a local franchise owner in Central Ohio has taken the next step.

Brian Mortellaro, who owns eight local McDonald’s, is launching the item at his store, along with two local other owners. That means a total of 11 stores, all in the Central Ohio area, will be testing the item.

“Filet-o-fish, Big Mac–both of those started with owner-operators,” Mortellaro told Columbus Business First. “We took this idea up the chain, and they’re letting us try it out.”

Not in Central Ohio? The breakfast item may make its way beyond the Midwest depending on customer reviews. If people respond positively, as decided by customer surveys not necessarily sales, it could get an even larger test run, said Mortellaro.

“We’re always looking for new ways to offer relevant tastes to our customers. As with all of our tests, we’re seeking customer feedback, and this region was selected to provide that valuable feedback in this case,” said a McDonald’s spokesperson, who warns that that it’s “premature” to know if the test run will be expanded.

For now, you can try it at some McDonald’s (MCD) locations around Columbus until March 27th.
