Hillary Clinton says that she’ll release the transcripts of her paid speeches—but only if everyone else does, too.
The Democratic candidate has come under fire for making millions from paid speeches—some private, some not—to financial firms like Goldman Sachs and Deutsche Bank. At an MSNBC-Telemundo town hall in Las Vegas on Thursday, Clinton said that her opponents have also given speeches to private groups.
“I am happy to release anything I have when everybody else does the same,” Clinton said in response to a question from a Nevadan realtor, who asked her to release the transcripts. The candidate then pivoted, talking about her proposals to rein in Wall Street. When the next questioner asked her to release the private transcripts to restore his faith in her after she opposed same-sex marriage in the early aughts, she responded by discussing her evolution on marriage equality and ignored the matter of the transcripts.
Clinton’s private meetings with major financial firms were described by The Wall Street Journal as friendly, even “gushy,” but not likely to create significant controversy if published. Meanwhile, troves of Clinton’s other private communications—her emails from her tenure as Secretary of State—are still being released in supplements.
