If the Republican primary process drags on past the upcoming Super Tuesday contests, there could be an interesting wrinkle in the election schedule: Donald Trump will have to testify in a fraud case against him.
According to court documents filed last week in federal court, Donald Trump will have to appear as a witness in a case involving Trump University (now called the The Trump Entrepreneur Initiative), an online education company that purports to train students in the art of real estate management.
The news was first reported by Yahoo’s Michael Isikoff who points out that Trump already had to take time out of his campaign schedule back in December to give a closed-door pretrial deposition in the case. The upcoming trial, for which a date hasn’t been set, could be “a much bigger burden on Trump’s time,” Isikoff writes, especially if the trial does get set to take place during the 2016 election.
The issue could plague the Trump campaign simply because of optics, however. These suits accuse Trump defrauding customers of thousands of dollars for what turned out to be worthless courses. And the California suit is not the only case that has been brought against Trump for his involvement in Trump University. Back in 2013 New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman filed a civil suit against Trump for his involvement with what Schinderman called an “illegal” educational institution.
