Despite getting some support from his party, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan says he doesn’t want to get the Republican nomination from a contested convention. He issued a statement today saying that “The speaker is grateful for the support, but he is not interested. He will not accept a nomination.”
Take this with a grain of salt, though. Ryan also said he didn’t want to be speaker, but was cajoled into taking the job.
The man Ryan took the gavel from, John Boehner, expressed his support for Ryan.
“If we don’t have a nominee who can win on the first ballot, I’m for none of the above,” Boehner said at the Futures Industry Association conference, reports Politico. “They all had a chance to win. None of them won. So I’m for none of the above. I’m for Paul Ryan to be our nominee.”
Mitt Romney, who won the Republican nomination in 2012 and picked Ryan as his running mate, has also been thrown out as a potential nominee from a brokered convention.
