Windows 10 phones remain the also-rans of the smartphone universe. But at least they now have a Twitter app all to themselves.
The not-so-elegantly-named “Twitter for Windows 10 Mobile” app is available now from the Windows store.
Twitter announced a version of its app for Windows 10 desktops laptops and tablets in July. What’s new this week is a version suited for smartphones.

In a blog post announcing the news on Wednesday, Twitter (TWTR) product designer Angela Lam explained:
With Twitter for Windows 10 on mobile, you can experience Moments and group Direct Messages; shoot, edit, and Tweet video using your camera; share a Tweet and add your own commentary with quote Tweet; it’s easier to follow conversations; and you can check out top Tweets without logging in.
VentureBeat and other outlets also noted the timing is no accident. Microsoft (MSFT) is expected to roll out Windows 10 mobile operating system on March 17.

It’ll take a lot more than an official Twitter app to give Windows 10 phones the momentum needed to survive in a market dominated by Apple (AAPL) iPhones and Android phones of various flavors.
But hey, it’s a start.
