We hear a ton about compensation for chief executive officers. But when it comes to chief information officers or other top-tier technology execs, that information is much harder to come by.

Part of the problem is that compensation for chief information officers (CIOs), chief technology officers (CTOs), and other top IT executives, is listed in just 21 of the 486 Coins2Day 500 company proxies surveyed, according to DiscoverOrg, which did the legwork and posted its findings.

It was 486 and not 500 because holding companies like Berkshire Hathaway (BRKA) don’t have chief information officers, said Henry Schuck, co-founder and chief executive of DiscoverOrg, a Vancouver, Wash.-based provider of sales analytics software. And, the holding companies’ component business units may or may not have their own top technology execs.

CIO Dilemma: So Many Priorities So Little Time

So who’s the best-paid tech exec among those 21 companies?

That would be Philip Fasano, executive vice president and CIO of insurance giant AIG (AIG) whose 2015 compensation came in at a healthy $8,397,689 million. The former CIO of Kaiser Permanente joined AIG in 2014.

Adriana Karaboutis, executive vice president of technology and business services at Biogen (BIIB), ranked second at $7,746,857 in 2015 compensation.

And Martha Poulter, executive vice president and CIO of Starwood Hotels (HOT) rounded out the top three with $4,565,947 for 2015.

Check out the whole list, there’s more interesting stuff in there —I was struck, for example, by how many of the top earners were in the retail arena.
