Seeing the writing on the wall, Ted Cruz will be suspending his Presidential campaign.
Cruz suffered a crushing loss in the Indiana Primary, with his rival Donald Trump taking more than 50% of the vote in the Hoosier State. With upcoming states seeming favorable to Trump as well, it was looking increasingly likely that Trump would be able to get the 1,237 delegates needed to win the nomination on the first ballot at the National Convention in Cleveland in July.
In his concession speech Tuesday night, Cruz mostly avoided attacking Trump. Instead, he repeatedly attacked Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and the Democratic Party. He didn’t, though, directly endorse or announce his support of Trump
Still, though, Cruz seemed to plant the seeds of a future run. He evoked Ronald Reagan’s 1976 campaign against Gerald Ford. Reagan lost the primary, and Ford ultimately lost to Jimmy Carter in the fall. Four short years later, Reagan was President, and he’s a Republican demigod decades later.
For now, though, the moment and the Party belong to Trump.
