Taxi Drivers Protest Possible Uber Expansion In NYC
NEW YORK, NY - JULY 20: An Uber vehicle is viewed in Manhattan on July 20, 2015 in New York City. New York's City Council has proposed two bills last month to limit the number of new for-hire vehicles, as well as to study the rapidly rising industry's impact on traffic. Uber has responded in an open letter arguing that its 6,000 Uber cars out during an average hour are a small part of the city's overall traffic. In cities across the globe Uber has upended the traditional taxi concept with many drivers and governments taking action against the California based company. Taking an Uber (UBER) has just become a more reasonable alternative to your morning subway ride.

Instead of suffering on a crowded train during your morning commute, New Yorkers can now opt for $5 UberPOOL rides. The company announced on Sunday that Manhattanites will now be offered a flat rate of $5 for their UberPOOL. However, there are some limitations.

According to the press release, the deal will only be available during peak rush hours on weekdays—from 7 a.m. To 10 a.m. And then again from 5 p.m. To 8 p.m., Monday through Friday. It will also only be accessible for Uber riders who are getting both picked up and dropped off in Manhattan below 110th street.

As with any UberPOOL, you’ll get picked up at a corner near your starting point and dropped off at another corner near your destination, making the route more direct and subsequently saving you time. But you may have to deal with picking up and dropping off other commuters, likely adding to your travel time.

Coins2Day reported that Uber cut prices in New York City by 15% earlier this year. The tactic was meant to increase ridership, which is likely what the company is hoping to get out of this latest move.

Uber could not immediately be reached for comment.
