One of TV’s most famous misanthropes is returning to the small screen after an extended leave of absence.
HBO announced on Tuesday that Curb Your Enthusiasm will be back for a ninth season on the premium cable network. The show, run by and based on Seinfeld co-creator Larry David and starring David as a caricature of himself, is already HBO’s longest-running scripted drama or comedy.
“We’re thrilled that Larry has decided to do a new season of ‘Curb’ and can’t wait to see what he has planned,” said Casey Bloys, president of HBO programming, through a post on Medium.
Details like the slated premiere date and potential guest stars are still sparse. But the fact that David chose to come back after being off the air since Curb’ s eighth season in 2011 speaks to his close relationship with the network.
HBO execs have previously stated that David can, for the most part, choose to make a new Curb season (or not) whenever he wants. There have been previous gaps between seasons, too—but none lasting more than two years until this point. (David did write and star in the 2013 HBO film Clear History, a kind-of spiritual successor to Curb, to mixed reviews).
David has stated that he only took his sabbatical from the show because he simply didn’t have many ideas for a new season. Evidently, that’s changed.
“In the immortal words of Julius Caesar, ‘I left, I did nothing, I returned,'” he said in HBO’s announcement.
