Good news for emoji lovers: You can soon text with the avocados, peanuts, bats, and croissants among the 72 new emojis that are set to release Tuesday.
Unicode 9.0 officially approves and releases the new emojis today, they may not come to your phone right away. The new emojis should appear on smartphones and other devices that support them once vendors have a chance to make updates.
Other food emojis include bacon, pancakes, and an egg. Nearly two dozen “smileys and people” emojis will also make their debut: a Pinocchio face, a clown face, a sneezing face, a pregnant woman, and even a prince and Mrs. Claus. There are also new expressions that haven’t been available before: a face palm, fingers crossed, and a shrug. For animal lovers, a duck, eagle, deer, squid, lizard, fox, and gorilla are just some of the 14 new “animals and nature” emojis.
But more emojis could be too much of a good thing. Researchers at the University of Minnesota talked to 334 people across the U.S. Who analyzed emojis from Apple, Google, Microsoft, Samsung, and LG. The researchers asked the participants what they thought the emojis meant, how they would describe them, and how they might use them.
What they found was emojis lead to a lot of miscommunication and misinterpretation. According to the study, 25% of the time, people who view the exact same emoji on the exact same kind of device disagree about whether the emotion being conveyed by the emoji is positive, negative, or neutral.
