Donald Trump is not giving up the fight for Bernie Sanders’ supporters.
In a speech on Tuesday that focused on the pitfalls of free trade and globalization, Trump made direct appeals to Sanders supporters to join his camp and cast aside Hillary Clinton, who has historically favored free trade deals like NAFTA.
“Globalization has made the financial elite who donate to politicians very, very wealthy … but it’s left millions of our workers with nothing but poverty and heartache,” Trump told supporters in Monessen, Pennsylvania.
Trump has praised Sanders for speaking out against trade deals in the past, frequently noting that it is the only thing the two agree on. Criticizing NAFTA and other free trade deals has in the past been mostly the domain of left wing activists and agitators, but Trump has adopted the message and applied it to his right-wing populist campaign.
As part of his push to influence the Democratic Party platform, USA Today notes, Sanders is trying to get the party to stand against trade deals that don’t sufficiently help workers.
So far, Trump’s attempt to win over Sanders voters hasn’t worked. A recent poll from The Washington Post and ABC News found that just 8% of Sanders supporters planned to vote for Trump. That figure was 20% last month.
