The federal government has issued a recall for a child’s water bottle that is sold only at L.L Bean amid concerns of lead in the exterior base of the bottles.
On Wednesday, the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission issued the recall for five styles of the insulated water bottles. The following color prints are being recalled: Dino Bones, Flower Power, Orange Grid camo, Purple Tie Dye Butterfly and Robo Shark.
According to the CPSC, the bottles were made in China and distributed by a Spokane, Washington company. The bottles have high levels of lead in the solder at the exterior base of the bottle. Lead, if ingested by young children, is toxic and can cause adverse health issues, according to the CPSC recall. No injuries or incidents have been reported as a result of exposure to the bottles.
The Freeport-based outfitter L.L. Bean is offering a full refund on the 6,700 bottles that were sold. According to its website, the bottles went under routine testing by the manufacturer and resulted in a positive reading for the presence of lead.
“It was determined that some of the water bottles provided to L.L.Bean were erroneously sealed on the bottom with a solder bead containing lead instead of the lead-free solder bead originally specified,” said website notice. “This could potentially expose the user of the bottle to the lead seal on the outside bottom of the water bottle. For your child’s safety, immediately stop using the water bottle and return the bottle to L.L.Bean.”
The item identification number 297684 is printed on a sticker on the bottom of the suspect bottle. Also printed on the sticker are “PO#844” and “BB2D2-LLB-R45-0413.”
