In a speech introducing her father as the Republican presidential nominee, Ivanka Trump did everything she could to sell him to two of the groups he has struggled with — millennials and women.
“Like many of my fellow millennials, I do not consider myself categorically Republican or Democrat,” she said early in the speech. “Sometimes it’s a tough choice. That is not the case this time.”
Donald Trump has been criticized throughout his campaign for comments he has made about women. And Ivanka, a self-described feminist, has sought throughout the campaign to be the counterweight to the assumption that he is a misogynist. That was in full force on Thursday evening, as Ivanka Trump asserted that her father put women in positions of power on construction sites “long before it was commonplace.”

She also said that at Trump’s company “women are paid equally for the work that we do, and when a woman becomes a mother, she is supported, not shut out.”

Ivanka claimed that her father would “change the labor laws” that were written before women frequently worked outside the home. She said that in the modern era, it is motherhood rather than gender that creates a wage gap, and that her father would work to “make quality childcare affordable and accessible for all.”

To be sure, the focus on wage inequality and working mothers is a bit out of place at a GOP convention, but perhaps that makes sense, given that Ivanka made it clear early in the speech that she is indifferent about party identification.
