Amazon has recruited more manufacturers to build devices that automatically re-order detergent, pet food, and trash liners when customers run out.
The push is part of Amazon’s effort to get its Dash Replenishment service into an array of household appliances like printers, washing machines, and pet feeders. Amazon’s sensor detects when supplies in the device are running low so that it can order more from Amazon.
The newly recruited manufacturers include The Hershey Company, smart vacuum manufacturer Neato Robotics, smart pet company Petcube, trash can manufacturer simplehuman, and home automation company SmartThings. Additionally, GE will add more appliances to the service in addition to washing machines.

Amazon announced Dash Replenishment in 2015 when it introduced its Dash Internet-connected buttons that let customers re-order a specific product by simply pressing a button. The replenishment service is a huge step for Amazon when it comes to snagging more of the consumers’ wallet by making commerce so easy that customers don’t even think about. The Dash Replenishment service is already being integrated into Lenovo and Samsung printers, GE washing machines, and Brita water filters, among others.
With Thursday’s announcement, consumers can expect to see GE dishwashers and dryers that will automatically order detergent and fabric softener from Amazon when their supplies run low. AESOP-WORKS, which makes a smart device that keeps track of how much medicine is being consumed and when, will now order over the counter medicines and vitamins from Amazon.

Another variation announced Thursday was that Neato Robotics’ robot vacuum will reorder replacement filters and brushes when supplies are needed. Simplehuman’s smart trash can will order new liners while home automation platform SmartThings will replenish batteries for connected devices in the home such as door locks, cameras, and sensors.
Hershey’s didn’t disclose details about how it would incorporate the replenishment service.
Amid stiff competition from Google and Apple, Amazon has been betting big on Internet of things, essentially household gadgets and industrial equipment that connect to the Internet. Amazon products include Echo, the Internet-connected speaker, personal assistant, and home automation platform. But what makes Amazon’s strategy different from others is that all its services are linked to the company’s core e-commerce business. That could give it an advantage when it comes to providing additional internet connected services for the home.
