RushCard, the prepaid debit card provider co-founded by hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, is reportedly adding new security features to better protect its customers from theft.
Come Monday, the company will announce a fingerprint authentication on its app, as well as the option for customers to temporarily freeze their accounts if they lose their cards, according to the Wall Street Journal.
In addition to the security functions, RushCard’s app will allow customers to virtually access a discount prescription program at Walmart and let them leave those cards at home.
RushCard sprang to national attention last fall when hundreds of thousands of customers complained of being locked out of their accounts during a technical glitch. The company at the time said it had been trying to upgrade its software.

The app’s upcoming features represent the first major changes brought under freshly minted CEO Ron Hynes, according to the Journal. He joined the company last month from Mozido, a mobile payments platform, and prior to that served as executive vice president of MasterCard’s prepaid solutions division.
Though Hynes led the rollout, the security upgrades were planned before his arrival, he told the Journal. He was enthusiastic about the company’s fine-tuning of its customer service, suggesting it represents a return to RushCard’s core business.

“We’re thriving and finally we’re able to get back to the business of bringing new products and services to market that benefit our customer base,” he said.
