Apple CEO Tim Cook took to the stage at the company’s highly anticipated reveal of its new iPhone to share a number interesting stats on its App Store.
Cook boasted on Wednesday in San Francisco that Apple has seen 140 billion downloads of apps in the company’s digital app store.
For context, Apple (AAPL) passed 100 billion downloads in June 2015.
“Apps continue to do more amazing things,” Cook said. He also shared that app downloads have grown by 106% from July to August, perhaps attempting to dismiss any feelings that apps are dead.
Additionally, Cook said that Apple’s apps have returned two times the global revenue to developers than its “closet competitor.” While Cook didn’t name that competitor by name, it’s obviously Google’s rival app store for Android apps, Google Play (GOOG).

In terms of specific types of apps, Cook highlighted the growth and popularity of the 500,000 games in the App Store.
But those numbers are sure to grow in a few months as a new game will launch in the App Store. Cook revealed that a paid version of Nintendo’s iconic video game Super Mario Bros. Will debut around the holidays this winter.
