Drones have changed the way we see the world above ground, and now two treasure hunters want to change the way we explore the world below sea level.
David Lang and Eric Stackpole were trying to find a remotely operated vehicle to help them locate gold in a cave in California, but all of the options they came across were out of their budget. So they decided to make their own.
That endeavor turned into OpenROV, a business focused on small underwater drones designed for exploration.
The Trident Underwater Drone is equipped with a high-definition camera and a radio buoy (making it easier for the device to move around without getting completely lost at sea), and has four hours of battery life and a range of 100 meters.
There are two versions of the robot: a DIY version you can build yourself, or a pre-made device that’s ready to hit the water right out of the box.

But this toy doesn’t come cheap: You can pre-order the OpenROV for $1,199.
