Google unveiled a new virtual reality headset, Daydream View, on Tuesday.
The headset and controller, which cost $79, will be available in November. The device is a rival to Samsung Gear VR, which has a list price of $99, but is currently available through Amazon for $69.99.
As explained by Google’s VR chief Clay Bavor, Daydream View is “soft and cozy” to wear. The viewer and strap include microfiber fabric that is intended to create a softer feel on the wearer’s face than the plastic and metals used in other viewers. Bavor said that Google worked with clothing manufacturers to create the device, which is roomy enough to fit over the wearer’s eyeglasses.
Like Samsung’s Gear VR, Daydream’s headset works wirelessly with compatible Android phones, which act as the screen. To attach the phone, you insert it onto the headset using a small latch. The first phone that is compatible with Daydream is Google’s new Android phone, Pixel, which also debuted on Tuesday. Bavor added that other manufacturers will develop compatible phones.

A hand-held controller is needed for moving through virtual reality games, movies, and more. The controller can also be stored inside the headset when not being used.
In terms of colors, the headset comes in a dark gray, and will be released in light gray and red in the coming months.

Google first revealed Daydream, a new virtual reality platform that is part of the latest version of Android, in May. At the same time, it disclosed early plans for the new Daydream View headset, but without a price and many details except for a basic design.
Daydream View is also, cheaper more-mobile version of Facebook’s Oculus Rift, which costs $599.
