Jill Stein, who was the 2016 Green Party presidential candidate, plans to file for election recounts in three swing states won by President-elect Donald Trump
Stein’s campaign launched a fundraising page on Wednesday, aiming to raise $2.5 million by Friday at 4 p.m. In order to ensure recounts in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, arguing that “data suggests a significant need to verify machine-counted in vote totals” in those states.
As of Wednesday at 3 p.m., the page had raised more than $30,700.
“After a divisive and painful presidential race, reported hacks into voter and party databases and individual email accounts are causing many American to wonder if our election results are reliable,” Stein said in a statement, referencing recent hacks into the Democratic National Committee’s server and the emails of Hillary Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta.
“These concerns need to be investigated before the 2016 presidential election is certified. We deserve elections we can trust,” Stein said.
Stein’s announcement comes after some voting-rights experts and advocates have urged Hillary Clinton to call for a recount in those states, raising concerns about interference by hackers, according to New York magazine. But other election analysts have dismissed their concerns.
