The campaign to recount election votes in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, led by Green Party Presidential nominee Jill Stein, has raised more than $3 million so far following its launch on Wednesday.
Stein’s fundraising website for the recount campaign shows that roughly $3.3 million had been donated by midday on Thursday, out of a $4.5 million target. The campaign is targeting the three Rust Belt states that were crucial to Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. Presidential election, with the website noting that “these recounts are part of an election integrity movement to attempt to shine a light on just how untrustworthy the U.S. Election system is.” Stein referred to the reliability of the election results in a statement Wednesday, in which she said “These concerns need to be investigated before the 2016 presidential election is certified. We deserve elections we can trust.”
The campaign website notes that the recount costs for Wisconsin have now been raised, and efforts will now focus on the funding for recounts in Pennsylvania and Michigan, which have deadlines on Monday and Wednesday respectively. It also states that these three states were selected because of “statistical anomalies” that raised concerns among independent experts.
