Two companies—the supermarket chain Publix and Stonewall Kitchen—have voluntarily issued a recall of their pancake and waffle mixes for potential Salmonella.
The milk used in Publix’s mixes has tested positive for the bacterium, and the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has found traces of Salmonella at the facility where the powdered buttermilk used in Stonewall’s mixes is made. However, according to the FDA notice, the pathogen hasn’t been found in the powdered products supplied to Stonewall Kitchen by the ingredient manufacturer.
Neither of the company’s finished products have tested positive for Salmonella, and there haven’t been any reported illnesses, either. However, both companies are recalling their products as a precaution.
Salmonella is an illness that can cause diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. Although most people can recover without treatment, some patients need hospitalization. The elderly, infants, and those with “impaired immune systems” are more likely to have a severe complications, the FDA reports.
Publix stores in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee, and North Carolina were sold the potentially affected mixes, the FDA announced. The flavors that are possibly contaminated include: Banana-Flavored Chocolate Chip, Pumpkin, and Blueberry.

Publix (PUSH) customers who believe that purchased one of the possibly contaminated products can return it to the store for a refund. Those who have further questions about the product or its recall can call 1-800-242-1227 for more information.
Although Stonewall Kitchen is a less common brand, the company still issued a voluntary recall because the mixes were sold nationwide at its ten storefronts, on its website, and through its wholesale division.
The Stonewall Kitchen products included in this recall were packaged in 1-pound jars, and include the cinnamon apple, orange cranberry, and toasted coconut flavors, the FDA reports. Customers who believe they purchased a possibly contaminated item should look for the “best by” date of Feb. 5, 2018 or Feb. 18, 2018 for the cinnamon apple flavor, Feb. 9, 2018 for the orange cranberry flavor, and Nov.30, 2017 for the toasted coconut flavor.
