Nintendo Switch’s streaming services are coming—eventually.
Speaking to the Washington Post in an interview published on Wednesday, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said that Nintendo Switch will support streaming video services—like Netflix (NFLX), Hulu, and Amazon (AMZN) Video—”in time.”
Fils-Aime told the Post, however, that Nintendo is focused first on the popular console’s gaming features.
“In our view, these are not differentiators,” Fils-Aime said of the streaming services. “What differentiates us is the way you play with the Nintendo Switch and what you can play.”

Nintendo (NTDOY) released its Switch console on March 3 to worldwide fanfare. The device lets gamers play video games on a television and continue to play on the go by removing the Switch from a dock connected to the television. The console, which costs $300, has been an international success and is currently sold out.
Fils-Aime told The New York Times earlier this week that the Switch’s sales in its first two days on store shelves surpassed the first two-day sales for any previous Nintendo console.
The Switch generally received positive reviews, but was criticized for not offering streaming video services and a Web browser. The Switch’s competitors—Microsoft’s (MSFT) Xbox One and Sony’s (SNE) PlayStation 4—both support several streaming services, including Netflix and Web browsers.
The Switch’s omission was conspicuous, and Nintendo has continued to say that it’s focused on gaming in the Switch—leaving streaming and other features as secondary concerns.
While Fils-Aime said Nintendo is still thinking along those lines, he added that the game company is holding talks with prominent streaming providers.
He didn’t, however, say exactly when he expects the streaming services to make their way to the Switch.
