Nearly a quarter of U.S. Adults have sold or traded in a vehicle in the last 12 months, with 9% of that group turning to ride sharing services like Uber and Lyft as their main way to get around, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll.
The study also revealed that 9% of people plan to dispose of cars and instead turn to ride services in the upcoming year. University of California, Berkeley researcher Susan Shaheen told Reuters that the results agreed with the results of her 2016 car-sharing study, which found a small portion of customers had sold a vehicle due to carsharing.
The results of the poll come less than a year after Uber founder and CEO Travis Kalanick told the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting of the New Champions in Tianjin, China, that one day people “might own a car like maybe some people own a horse. You know, they might take a ride on the weekends or something.”
He added: “I think that’s where the world is going. People will not own cars, they’ll have a service that takes them where they want to go, when they want to go there. And that’s what Uber is.”
