President Donald Trump is planning to meet with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer over the ongoing situation at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Tweeting late Sunday, Trump explained that it is “a GREAT thing” that Schumer has “finally gone to the Southern Border.” Schumer and other Democratic senators toured detention facilities at the border, including one in Texas on Friday.
While Schumer and the other senators publicly decried the appalling conditions of the facilities, Trump appeared focused on the threat of illegal immigration.
“Nearby, he missed a large group of Illegal Immigrants trying to enter the USA illegally,” Trump said. “They wildly rushed Border Patrol. Some Agents were badly injured.”
“Based on the comments made by Senator Schumer, he must have seen how dangerous & bad for our Country the Border is,” Trump continued. “It is not a ‘manufactured crisis,’ as the Fake News Media & their Democrat partners tried to portray. He said he wants to meet. I will set up a meeting ASAP!”
Trump was apparently referring to an incident on Friday in which dozens of people rushed the Pharr International Bridge, which crosses the Rio Grande, in an attempt to enter the U.S.
Schumer, meanwhile, had not given any indication that he was in alignment with Trump’s point of view. Following his tour on Friday, Schumer told reporters “they’re treating them all like criminals. And if you listen to the president you’d think they were all criminals. They’re not. They’re simply seeking some…honor, decency for their children.”
“It’s awful, the conditions these people are placed in,” he noted. Schumer also posted several videos and photos to Twitter following the visit, showing the conditions in which people are currently being held.
“This is not acceptable. A child telling us he’s not able to even brush his teeth in a facility on our southern border. These are human beings, children, kids, families, fleeing violence. This is not who we are,” he wrote.
