AT&T is using incentives to lure more subscribers to its wireless program.
Starting Tuesday, the carrier will offer a Spotify Premium subscription as one of seven entertainment options to people who are part of its “Unlimited & More Premium” service. Other existing options include HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, Starz, VRV (which features fan curated content) and Pandora Premium.
The addition of Spotify is a new offering that is part of a broader alliance between the two companies. Subscribers who don’t want to pay for the “Unlimited & More Premium” plan will still be eligible for a six month trial of Spotify Premium, which lets users avoid commercials, skip tracks and download music. After that, they’ll have to pay the normal $10 per month subscription fee, if they wish to continue.
The move comes a few months after Verizon aligned itself with Apple Music, offering subscribers of its top tier unlimited plans a complimentary premium subscription to that service. As new subscriber growth slows in the mobile phone market, providers are looking for new ways to lure customers away from their current companies, including lowering prices.
For Spotify, the alliance is a chance to continue its rapid growth. The music streaming service has 108 million Premium subscribers, adding 8 million of in the past quarter alone. AT&T has an impressive 77 million wireless customers, which could give Spotify a notable boost.
