Marriott Doing Away With Those Mini Shampoo Bottles You Love So Much

The days of individualized shampoo bottles in hotels look to be coming to an end.

Marriott is the latest chain to announce it will do away with small bottles of shampoo, bath gel and conditioner at its over 7,000 hotels worldwide. That follows similar announcements by IHG (owner of Holiday Inn) and Walt Disney resorts. The changes will be implemented by 2020.

Instead, the hotel chain says, guests can expect either larger bottles or wall-mounted dispensers. That’s more convenient and ecologically friendly (Marriott says the move will reduce its annual plastic usage by 30%), but it also takes away from the personalization of a hotel stay and could dampen the feeling of luxury travelers to high-end hotels seek.

It’s the expansion of a test that began in 2018 at Marriott. The chain says 20% of its properties already use larger pump-topped bottles in their showers. (The changes will also be part of the 1,700 hotels Marriott plans to open over the next three years.)

“Our guests are looking to us to make changes that will create a meaningful difference for the environment while not sacrificing the quality service and experience they expect from our hotels,” said Arne Sorenson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Marriott International in a statement.
